Children in Worship

Children aren’t just welcome at St. Stephen’s—they are a joyful and important part of our church family! At the 10:30 a.m. service, children are invited to participate in whatever ways feel comfortable. Wiggles, whispers, and a little joyful noise are always welcome.

Before worship begins, children can join our ushers in the narthex to greet people and hand out bulletins.

When it’s time for the procession, children are invited to gather behind the Children’s Cross and follow it into church then find their seats. During the Sequence Hymn, they may follow the cross to Children’s Chapel.

In Children’s Chapel, we explore the Gospel through age-appropriate storytelling, conversation, prayer, and a hands-on activity. On some Sundays, children may hear a special seasonal Godly Play story. Together, they share a children’s creed and return to the service in time for the Peace.

Back in church, there are even more ways to join in! Children may help collect the offering, bring the bread and wine forward, and gather with the clergy at the back of the church for the dismissal.

Whether your child wants to jump right in or simply watch and become familiar with worship, they are welcome to participate at their own pace. We’re glad they’re here—and we’re glad you’re here, too.

Activity Bags

Children’s activity bags are available in the wicker basket at the back of the church—just grab one on your way in!

Quiet Room

Wiggles, giggles, whispers, and cries are always welcome during worship. We also understand that some families may feel more comfortable with a little extra space from time to time.

Our Infant Quiet Room offers a comfortable place to nurse, change a diaper, soothe a little one, or simply take a break. The room includes a rocking chair, changing table, child-sized furniture, and activities. You are welcome to stay for as much of the service as you would like, and you’ll still be able to see and hear the worship service from the room.

The entrance is located in the Narthex (the area outside the main church) near the double doors. If you need help finding it, simply ask an usher—we’ll be happy to show you the way.
